HK Diner
If you fancy a break from the traditional with a more contemporary experience that's still authentic, head to HK Diner on Wardour Street. Described by fans as 'the most authentic Hong Kong experience in Chinatown', it's a modern, café-style eatery with cosy, C-shaped booths and a menu of Cantonese favourites well worth exploring.
By exploring, we mean venturing off the English set menu. Like many Chinatown restaurants, the English menu doesn't cover the full range of dishes on the Chinese menu. The trick is to ask a waiter for dishes like the barbecue pork and crispy pork with rice (Char Siu and Siu Yo) that many regulars make the trip to HK Diner especially for. The contrasting flavours of the two types of pork are fantastic and well worth the trip alone. HK Diner's roast duck is also said to be a cut above the competition, as are its pork belly dishes.
Other regulars suggest looking around to see what other people are eating, or asking staff to recommend a selection of food for you. Prices range from around ;£5 to £10 for most main dishes, so your trip needn't be an expensive experience. And, if you're feeling adventurous on the beverage front, you'll enjoy HK Diner's authentic Bubble Tea - cold, milky tea with chewy tapioca pearls in it.
